The deceased was identified as Chandramohan (72) from Adambakkam, a retried private firm employee. Police said his wife went to visit their daughter in Bengaluru before the lockdown started in March and could not return after that. Chandrasekaran, who had health issues, could not survive the lockdown alone. Sources said his wife had applied for e-pass many times, but every time it got rejected.
On Thursday morning, the neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from Chandrasekaran’s house and informed the Adambakkam police. The police, on breaking open the door found Chandrasekar hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom. Police retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem to Chromepet government hospital. Police said he might have committed suicide four days ago. A case has been registered and further inquiry is on.

‘‘The antibody test will identify the persons who were infected with the virus and cured and persons who had gotten the infection unknowingly. All the employees in Ripon Buildings will be tested first before extending the testing to zonal offices," Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said.
According to a Corporation statement, the exercise has been started by the civic body along with Strumed Solutions Private Limited and Ageis Home Healthcare Private Limited. The testing would be done using rapid test kits, which would show results within 15 minutes.

"The test will identify IgM or IgG antigen in the persons' bodies. If the results show IgM, the persons would be considered having the infection. If the results show IgG, it would be considered the persons had the infection but recovered. If IgM and IgG show negative, the person was neither infected with virus nor contracted the disease earlier," Prakash explained. The antibody tests will also help the civic body in identifying eligible plasma donors based on the amount of IgG present in the recovered persons.

Clarifying the reason for testing civic employees before testing the citizens, Prakash said that more than 44,000 civic employees have taken part in the COVID-19 control measures and it is important to keep them healthy to continue the measures.

Meanwhile, the civic body also distributed arsenic album, a homeopathy medicine, to improve the immunity level of the employees. Speaking to the reporters, Prakash said that some persons, who had given samples for testing, went untraceable due to fear of quarantine. "As many as 275 such persons remain untraceable. We are tracing them to bring them into the system. Providing false contact information during sample collection will put family members and neighbours in danger of contracting the virus," he said.

In the case of Tiruvallur where the numbers have been hovering between 250 and 300 every day for the past few weeks, 526 new cases were reported on Thursday to take the total number of confirmed cases to 8,107 confirmed cases. With 3,112 patients still under treatment, the district is in the third position behind Chennai and Madurai when it comes to active cases, show data from the Health Department.
Of the 8,107 cases in the district, 2,062 cases were reported after July 8. Also, 35 of the 141 COVID-19 deaths in Tiruvallur happened during the period.

When asked, a Health official from the district attributed the increase in cases to increased testing. “We are testing around 4,000 samples every day. Due to this, we are able to identify more cases and arrest the infection from spreading,” he said.

The official added that cases were more in areas like Avadi, Tiruverkadu, Ponneri, Poonamallee, and other urban local bodies abutting Chennai.

“We have introduced mobile sample collection vehicles and are conducting 40 to 50 fever clinics every day to identify positive cases,” he added.

Meanwhile, the newly formed Chengalpattu district reported 8,908 cases so far, including 2,107 active cases.

“More than 2,000 cases have been reported in the district within the last 10 days. As the populous suburbs like Tambaram, Pallavaram and Chromepet, and few places in ECR, border Chennai, the virus spread in Chengalpattu is high,” said an official from the district.

District Collector A John Louis said the district administration has started identifying streets that have two or more cases and lock it down for 14 days. “So far, more than 15 streets have been sealed in Maduranthagam and Pallavaram areas,” he said. Fever camps were being conducted in all the areas to identify people who have symptoms like fever and cold, and added that the number of camps would be increased, he added.

The people were supporting the district administration by wearing masks, said the Collector. “That itself is a huge support and will help control the virus spread. We created awareness among the public on wearing masks, and that is working,” he said.

50 textile showroom staff infected

As many as 50 employees of a textile showroom in Poonamallee were tested positive for the virus on Thursday. According to sources, samples from around 60 employees were tested after one of the employees tested positive earlier. “Following this, the shop has been locked and the infected persons and other staff have been quarantined,” a source said.

The latest reports said that around 21 people have died in Chennai in the last 12 hours.
The highest toll was reported in Rajiv Gandhi Hospital with 8, 6 from Omanthoorar Govt Hospital, 4 from Stanley Hospital and 3 from Kilpauk Hospital.

Meanwhile, Chennai reported 15,038 active cases. Out of the 82,128 positive Covid-19 cases, 65,748 have recovered.

According to data released by the Greater Chennai Corporation, Kodambakkam zone had the most number of corona positive patients seeking treatment and also suffered from a low recovery rate of 76%.

A statue of E V Ramasami ''Periyar'' was found smeared with saffron paint at Coimbatore on the wee hours of Friday. As the news spread, more than 20 cadres of DMK, MDMK, Dravidar Kazhagam and Thanthai Periyar Dravdar Kazhagam (TPDK) gathered in front of the statue and staged a protest demonstration demanding arrest of the culprits.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami, meanwhile assured of tough action. "Stringent action will be taken as per law. I have instructed the police to take appropriate action and bring the culprits to book," he told reporters at Erode.

It was later reported that a youth belonging to a fringe pro-Hindu outfit has surrendered in this connection.

Police said a young man in his twenties, Arun Krishnan, who is the Coimbatore south district organiser of Bharat Sena, has surrendered.

CCTV footage was being analysed and a probe was on, they said. The desecration by miscreants comes against the backdrop of the arrest of two men, who subscribe to atheism, for denigration of ''Kanda Sashti Kavasam,'' a popular, Tamil hymn held sacred and recited every day by millions of devotees in Tamil Nadu in praise of Lord Muruga/Skanda. The two men are connected to a Tamil video channel on a social media platform and it has content allegedly against Hindu beliefs, according to Hindu organisations.

Leaders across all political factions condemned the incident. Senior AIADMK leader and Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said such despicable acts can never be accepted, adding it was a punishable offence. DMK president M K Stalin said Periyar had slogged for "small men" as well, (seen as a reference to those behind sullying the statue by pouring paint) and that was why he was being hailed as "Periyar" (great man). MDMK chief Vaiko demanded that the government act 'responsibly' and take action. He condemned the "continuous targeting of Periyar's statues in Tamil Nadu." The PMK, an ally of the ruling AIADMK, demanded stern action against the miscreants and described the desecration as an act of cowardice.

Taking to Twitter, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi condemned this move stating that Periyar is not a mere statue but the path to social justice.

"Even after decades after his demise Periyar is still the one who sets the narrative. He is not a mere statue but the path to self-respect and social justice including those who smear him with colours," Kanimozhi tweeted.

A complaint has been filed by Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) workers in the matter.

Similarly, security was also provided to six more Periyar statues in the city and that of Dr B R Ambedkar as a precautionary measure.

Security was also tightened across the city to prevent any untoward incident.
